If anyone has watched any of my videos, you may have noticed that I love sculpting in 3D. So when I saw that CGCookie had a Blender sculpting workshop on realistic characters, I instantly said, “Yes, please!”. As the price tag is higher than what you would see for anything else at CGCookie, many may have questions about what to expect, and if it is worth the money. So, let’s answer those questions!
NOTE: Spring Workshop 2016 in Progress. Watch for the Summer 2016 workshop. (02/20/16)
I know in previous articles, like the How to Become a Professional Artist With Educational Sites article, and at the time CG Cookie was providing a lot less than it is now. Granted, at the time of that writing, they had thousands of videos covering many different digital art techniques for 2D, 3D, and Game Development. Since this summer, they have changed the way they wanted the company to move forward. With that said, I want to really go into that in depth, as I feel anyone reading this will appreciate being informed. Anyways, let’s get to it!
So, there are lots of sites all around to learn new and better practices for digital art. As I moved from one site to another, I found quite a few more, and each one taking me to a whole new level of art. So now I can look back at what various sites have given me, and what other sites will bring me closer to a professional standing. With all of these sites, it is more than possible to become a professional solely from subscription based sites, and workshops, completely avoiding college all together. With both 2D and 3D, once you learn the basics and fundamentals, as well as your software, it’s all about applying your style, and then learning from others, mainly professionals. So, I wanted to point out all of these awesome sites, what you can learn, how much they cost, and what you can learn from each one of them. I’ll also point out the few places I was not happy about at all, and if you are from those organizations, you can take a lesson from the other sites.
If you haven’t noticed already, I love learning as much as possible. Also, I tend to go through a lot of workshops/courses, and later review them. I found this workshop shortly after finishing the Concept Cookie Workshop, wanting to learn more to refine my newly found skills from the previous workshop. The online brochure looked great, and even one of my art groups agreed. I volunteered to be the guinea pig, and send recommendations back to anyone else that was interested. Unfortunately, I have not finished this one, and never will. Now I will take the time to tell you why.
I can’t believe it took me so long to finally write this, as I thought I had long ago. Regardless, as it almost time for the 3rd run of this CGCookie workshop, it’s only fair to review it as soon as possible. So, if you follow Tim Vonn Reuden at all, or watch the Concept Cookie Livestream, then you can imagine what sort of things to expect. Of course the workshop gives you so much more foundation, instead of drawing “X”, or lighting “Y”.
